When we embarked on the first version of Side By Side, VB seemed the only way we could possibly go. Back in those dim dark ages, Agility/VB provided the database access that Side By Side needed to be useful, and the ‘multimedia’ component was provided by direct calls to the appropriate Windows drivers and by VB Tools’ Animated button control. Today, the choices might be a lot different, and we’re evaluating a number of the new tools available.
With the tools we had, palette management was always a problem, as was pure
application size. But Side By Side (which trains users on how to produce a
Performance Agreement, and actually produces one) needed both MultiMedia and
a flexible database. VB was the only choice. Still is, really.
